ABSTRACT
Imitation is the essential technique used in composing canons, inventions, and fugues. Bach also uses the device often in the composition of other forms. The ability to construct themes suit able for imitation, and to understand the ways in which the imitative process can be applied to them, is a prerequisite for the composition of larger imitation-based forms. This may best be accomplished through the analysis and writing of canons.
