ABSTRACT

The quote above aptly summarizes the great variety of “folk” who have helped me with this project. I am grateful for the intellectual support provided by those who “have to do more constantly with reading and writing,” including the friends, colleagues, and professors who, over the years, have helped and inspired me. This book started as a dissertation, the seeds of which were planted by Eric Monkkonen at the University of California, Los Angeles, more years ago than I care to admit. Thanks are due to him and to my committee at Yale University, including Jean-Christophe Agnew, for introducing me to the market; Nancy Cott, for redefining my conception of the political; and, most of all, to Dolores Hayden, for overseeing my dissertation from start to finish and for having faith in me even when my own faith was lacking.
