ABSTRACT

Most enterprises can expect to change their computer information system either to a new system or have a major upgrade at least every 3 to 5 years. With rapidly developing technology and the advent of new features and functions, it is essential that the company makes the best choice possible in a new system. This includes the hardware platform, database tool, and the overall philosophy of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Some ERP systems are well designed for the entrepreneurial business with decentralized controls, while others offer an excellent fit for corporate standardized business processes. Given that there are hundreds of ERP systems available globally, how can a company be sure that it got the one that is the best fit? Does it really matter which software is purchased? Why not just purchase the same system that everyone else seems to have? There must be a reason why particular software has most of the market, right? Do not be deluded into buying what everyone else has just because it is the most popular. That is no assurance that it will fit your company and support your future vision. The volume of questions that need to be answered to successfully select the best system for the enterprise can seem overwhelming. Is it correct to assume that each person thinks their company is unique? While many aspects of all businesses are similar, each business does have its uniqueness. To select wisely, we must answer all those questions from the point of view of our individual company.
