ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the Brundtland understanding of sustainable development. It focuses on the Brundtland formulation because it has achieved authoritative status. An increasing number of international organizations and agencies subscribe to at least some, and often most or all, of its objectives (Lafferty and Meadowcroft 2000).
