ABSTRACT
In the last chapter we saw the ways in which a language may use its internal resources to create new words. This chapter explores how, instead of building lexical items using its own resources, a language can add to the number of words in its lexicon by BORROWING vocabulary from other languages. English has borrowed so extensively from other languages that the English lexicon is like a large mosaic.
