3.4 Duration of symptoms
Table 2.7 presents data on the percentage of people in each neurotic disorder group who said that their symptoms had been present for 6 months or more, or 1 year or more. Of those with neurotic disorder, 63% had had an average length of symptom presence of 6 months or more, and 49% for a year or more. The data for disabling neurotic disorder were 72% for 6 months or more and 57% for 12 months or more. People with longstanding symptoms, therefore, dominate these diagnostic categories, even though the case identi®cation was based on the presence of disorder in the week before interview.
