described the Peruvian team’s midfield players (César Cueto, Teófilo Cubillas and José Velásquez of the Alianza Lima team) as the best in the world. The blue-and-white-shirted Alianza team had won the national championship that year for the second year in a row. Subsequently, however, the team had had a barren spell that seemed never-ending. Indeed, 18 years went by before the Alianza Lima team was able to relieve the suffering of its fans by winning the national championship in 1997.
