ABSTRACT
Statistical inference in stereology needs to be formulated carefully, as R.E. Miles [401] first demonstrated. Miles distinguished three kinds of statistical model for a stereological experiment, and showed that the choice of model has important practical consequences: it affects the meaning of parameters, the appropriateness of sampling techniques, the validity of stereological estimators, and the nature of inferences.
