ABSTRACT

Mountfields Lodge Primary School is a predominantly middle-class state nursery and primary school based in the Midlands region of England. It caters for over 540 students between the ages of 3 and 12. Students in Years 1 through to 6 are aged between 5 and 11/12 years and, in relation to the National Curriculum, are organised into key stage 1 (5-7 years) and key stage 2 (7-11 years) groupings. Approximately 10 per cent of students are formally identified as having special educational needs. Approximately 8 per cent of students come from ethnic minority backgrounds and have English as an additional language. The attainment of 11 year old students in national tests for English, mathematics and science in 2001 was close to or above national averages when compared to all schools. The 2002 OFSTED report for Mountfields Lodge noted that the school makes very good provision for sport (and music). Students’ standards in physical education at the end of Years 2 and 6 are in line with national expectations. The school is involved in national and local initiatives that aim to increase the range and quality of the sporting activities available to primary age children.
