ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will explore the concepts of alienability and inalienability of material culture as applied to the study of land. Like other elements of material culture, land is embedded in symbolic value and has practical implications in the life of individuals. But unlike other objects that are seen through the lens of alienability and inalienability, land, because of its lack of portability, of its very presence as an immovable thing, has its meanings activated in a different way.
