ABSTRACT

A bressummer is normally a large timber beam that bridges the opening formed by the addition of a bay window in a house. Back at the turn of the century, when these were a popular feature of small dwellings, the beams were constructed of large sections of timber. Frequently nowadays, however, these beams are in need of replacement as they have either been attacked by dry rot, wood boring insects or wet rot, owing to their lack of protection from the elements.
