As already mentioned, oxidative photodegradation of polymers involves processes of initiation, propagation and termination. The most frequently occurring photo-induced chemical degradations of polymers are chain scission and cross-linking, with concomitant formation of oxygen-containing functional groups such as carbonyl, carboxyl, hydroxyl and peroxides, which can be assessed easily by IR spectroscopy.
