During the design phase, a standards-based approach is essential to ensure the interoperability and complete security of your PKI. In many cases, a PKI represents a large, diverse system spread out across an enterprise. It is important that standards be followed during the design phase, so that your internal PKI systems can work together and continue to offer full security. If you decide to partner with another firm and use cross certification to extend your PKI, this is only possible through the use of standards.
