ABSTRACT

Copyrights are very important to the recording industry and to the economy of the United States as a whole. The copyright industries (theatrical films, TV programs, home video, DVDs, business and entertainment software, books, music and sound recordings) account for over 5 percent of the total U.S. economy (Gross Domestic Product), employ nearly 5 million workers, and comprise one of the nations largest exports.1 Chapters 2 and 3, though not intended to be a complete summary of copyright law, address its basics as they apply to the recording industry and a number of specific copyright law provisions and issues of great importance to the recording industry.
