ABSTRACT

Per-Olof Wikström (2005) identifi es two central themes in criminological theory, which propose that involvement in crime is dependent on, fi rst, who the person is and what are their personal characteristics and life experiences; and, second, where they are and what are the features of the environments in which the criminal behaviour takes place. Thus, while many of the criminological theories we have encountered in this book have contributed considerably to our understanding of the role of person and environmental differences in crime causation, these two strands of criminological theorising are rarely brought together in a developed integrated theoretical framework.
