ABSTRACT

As we have stated in earlier chapters, there is a lot of data on the Web that is unstructured. That is, much of the data on the Web is not in relational databases. The Web has newspaper articles, images, speeches, and video clips. These different data types have to be mined to extract patterns and trends. Furthermore, the search engines are incorporating mining capabilities. Searching and mining on the Web or otherwise is becoming very important for counter-terrorism applications. For example, there are many newspaper articles reporting on various associations, attacks, biographical information, events, and other activities. There are also images on the Web of presidents, terrorists, and government officials as well as video files of various people. This data has to be mined so that attacks can be detected and prevented. Search engines are also very useful. For example, if a sniper attack occurs in Maryland, the search engine should also search databases in other states to determine if similar shootings have occurred.
