ABSTRACT

Syria was one of the most aggressive states among the Arab League members in its attitude to the Palestine problem. It was the only one that not only filled the quota imposed by the Arab League’s Military Committee of arms and weapons to be provided to the Palestinian war effort, but did even more than was required. Thus, while required to provide 500 volunteers and 2,000 rifles, it actually provided 2,987 volunteers and 2,640 rifles. In addition, the Syrian government had provided the ALA with several 75-mm field cannons, 8 mortars, 74 machine-guns and communication devices.1 It also hosted the ALA on its territory, and it opened training camps for Palestinians and others who volunteered to fight in Palestine. The staff and the equipment were all Syrian.2
