Introduction

The war between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany lasted from June 1941 to May 1945 and remains one of the bloodiest wars in human history. Irrecoverable losses in the Soviet armed forces alone were in the region of 8,668,400, of which 12,031 were lost in the war with Japan.1 To this figure have to be added both the millions of Axis casualties and civilian war-related deaths.
