ABSTRACT

A plane crashes into the open countryside. Survivors stumble in a haze of smoke through a field of maize as tall as themselves, every footstep exquisitely loud. Each crunching step and laboured breath takes them back closer to the chaos of fire and bodies and panic surrounding the plane. This is the opening scene of the film, Fearless, and the hero of the film, acted flawlessly by Jeff Bridges, has a glazed expression as he passes a woman screaming for her baby, a child searching for his parents. He looks serenely at the scene of devastation, apparently oblivious to the roaring of flames, the wail of sirens and the human cries. Then he quietly appropriates a taxi cab and drives away from the scene.
