ABSTRACT

The aim of this book has been to present focused teaching on the use of homework assignments in cognitive behavioral therapy. We assumed that the reader had knowledge and practical experience of A.T.Beck’s (1976) cognitive theory and system of psychotherapy for depression (A.T.Beck, Rush, Shaw, & Emery, 1979). As the behavioral and cognitive theory foundations for the use of homework had not been previously discussed in the literature, we presented a comprehensive account as a preface to clinical discussions (Part I). The main section of this book comprises a series of clinically focused Chapters illustrating the use of homework assignments in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for a range of clinical populations (Part II) and presenting problems (Part III). In Part IV, we synthesized the clinical recommendations from earlier Chapters in order to present a guiding “model for practice.”
