ABSTRACT

Another example is connected with the 1961 work of Goldstone, in which it was shown that a spontaneous breaking of symmetry leads to the appearance of massless particles-goldstones. The attitude toward this work in the ITEP was as follows: everybody agreed that the work was interesting, but nobody wanted to develop these ideas further. Perhaps the reason for this was that nearly everyone at the ITEP (especially I.Ya. Pomeranchuk) was keen on Regge theory. In numerous discussions, YaB emphasized the depth and perspective of the Goldstone’s ideas and urged us to develop them. But, alas, his efforts were unsuccessful-we continued to be occupied with our own affairs. As is well known, the idea of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the appearance of goldstones now penetrates the whole of elementary-particle physics.
