This article is lovingly and grievingly dedicated to the memory of our colleague Eleanor M.Saffran. KP had several discussions with Eleanor about the expected impact of semantic impairment on lexical decision, and had hoped to benefit from her theoretical insights and experimental wisdom in investigating this issue. This paper therefore seems a particularly apt contribution to the issue of CN in honour of Eleanor and her outstanding contributions to the field of cognitive neuropsychology.
