ABSTRACT
It is a great pleasure to be here, and I am most grateful to the International Adam Smith Society for organizing this panel. It is an additional pleasure that it should take place in a city about which Smith had heard a great deal, and which was characterized, in his view, by a condition to which he attached the greatest importance, namely ‘philosophical good temper and moderation’ (Smith 1976b, WN V.i.g.8).
