ABSTRACT

Traveling west on either of the two highways across the Everglades, one enters very different terrain at Fortymile Bend on the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) or at the Miccosukee Service Plaza at Snake Road on Alligator Alley (I-75) (Figure 7.1 and Color Figure 3). Called the Big Cypress Swamp (often shortened to just “the Big Cypress”), this mostly forested region reveals a greater variety of plant communities than the Everglades.
