The same view is shared by Arnold Toynbee (1962) and many others. Celso Furtado (1962), Brazil’s Minister of Planning until the April 1964 coup, refers to the one Brazil, the modern capitalist and industrially more advanced Brazil, as an open society and to the archaic rural Brazil as a closed society.
