ABSTRACT

The ultimate goal of better characterization of the onset of psychotic disorders including schizophrenia is prevention of the full expression of the disorder and hence the reduction of incidence, prevalence and associated morbidity and mortality. This chapter will describe the context for preventive strategies for mental disorders in young people, and characterize the challenges and opportunities that exist in this crucial arena of public health. First, we consider the mental health of young people in general, consider the fundamental question of how to define a mental disorder, and then focus on the best mix of preventive strategies. Finally, we outline the kind of studies, models and treatments that need to be developed to underpin further progress.
