ABSTRACT
After the creation of the Turkish Republic in 1923, the political elite under the leadership of Ataturk undertook a massive set of reforms to modernize and westernize the country. The fundamental aim of the new political elite was to build a new identity (i.e. Western) for both the state and the people.
