ABSTRACT

The use of traditional herbal antimalarials is widespread, and there is some laboratory data for their efficacy, as demonstrated in the preceding chapters. However, the most important question to answer is whether traditional preparations are safe and effective against malaria in human patients. Some clinical data have already been mentioned in the case studies at the beginning of this book, but it would be useful to compare the efficacy of these preparations with each other and with any others that have been tested clinically. It would also be useful to review what methods have been used to conduct clinical trials on traditional herbal antimalarials and to reflect on how these could be improved.
