ABSTRACT

Many different medical and surgical therapies are available for inflammatory bowel disease. Medical therapies include antiinflammatory drugs such as sulfasalazine, olsalazine, balsalazide, and mesalamine; antibiotics; corticosteroids, including budesonide; immunosuppressive medications such as azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, methotrexate, cyclosporine, and tacrolimus; and biotechnology medications such as infliximab. Surgical therapies include colectomy with ileostomy, ileoanal pouch, or Kock pouch for ulcerative colitis and surgical resection, stricturoplasty, and placement of setons for Crohn’s disease.
