ABSTRACT

Taiwan’s economy experienced sustainable growth between the 1960s and the late 1990s. Even during the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis, Taiwan’s economy still maintained a moderate growth without the negative outcomes experienced in other Asian economies. However, this does not mean that there is no problem within the Taiwanese economy. In fact, many potential problems exist and could lead to a crisis if an adequate adjustment cannot be made. Government policy has been singled out as an important factor in such adjustment. However, a flexible and progressive management system is also an important factor for the survival and success of individual firms and the economy as whole. This essay is based on recent research into the changing elements of human resource management (HRM) in Taiwanese enterprises since the Asian crisis. Using information from earlier research by Chen (1997) the changes in HRM that are taking place are considered.
