ABSTRACT

For Livy, it had also been a productive, creative summer. While her husband wrote, she arranged the furnishings and decorating of her new home at 351 Farmington Avenue. In late August, she and Clemens made a trip to Fredonia, New York to visit Jane and Pamela. They had wanted to go on to Hartford, but returned to Elmira with Livy exhausted from preoccupation with readying their new house. Although delaying their move to Hartford, Livy rested until sufficiently recovered to travel to New York City. While Clemens coached actors in rehearsals of the dramatization of The Gilded Age, Livy bought more “‘carpets and furniture.”
