ABSTRACT

The United States celebrated its one hundredth birthday in 1876. For both Livy and her Youth it was a busy year. She remained occupied with her children, her home, and entertaining. Susie and Clara, now four and two, were going through their childhood diseases. Clemens remarked to Howells that plans had to be scheduled around their illnesses “because they always play such hob with visiting arrangements.” Livy was often again at home while her husband went out.
