ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 introduced the reader to the notion of diffusional processes in which mass transfer takes place by molecular motion only and is proportional to the concentration gradient of the diffusing species. This proportionality is enshrined in Fick’s law of diffusion and this introductory chapter was used to acquaint the reader with some simple applications of that law (see Illustration 1.2 and Illustration 1.3). The intent of the present chapter, and the one that follows, is to amplify and expand the material on diffusion presented in Chapter 1.
