ABSTRACT
While an in-depth analysis of this corpus of literature would fall outside the parameters of this study, I believe it worthwhile to comment here on how at least two novels from the Caribbean diaspora address issues involving heredity: Dreaming in Cuban (1992) by Cristina Garcia and How the García Girls Lost their Accents (1991) by Julia Alvarez. The events in each novel occur in both the Caribbean and the United States (especially New York City); similarly, each novel depicts further divisions Caribbean-Americans encounter, including those involving gender and language, particularly insofar as the United States both resembles and differs from the Caribbean in terms of these divisions.
