ABSTRACT

With an area of almost 2 million square kilometers, Mexico presents a variety of climates and landscapes. Although it is located in North America and has the United States-the most powerful nation in the world-on its northern border, its neighbors to the south, the Latin American countries, are closest to its historical, economical, and cultural identity. In 2000, there were 98 million inhabitants and, according to recent government data, 62.5% of them are poor (SEDESOL, 2002).
