ABSTRACT

This chapter elucidates the complex structural and functional characteristics of the human shoulder, elbow, and forearm in terms of muscular strength. Strength is discussed in the context of work through focusing upon and synthesizing the current state of clinical and experimental research concerning the muscles and joint systems in these parts of the upper limb. Such information is important when designing work, because all manual labor involves muscular activity about these joints in order to facilitate movements involving the hands. In addition, the upper limb is commonly injured in the process of work, and in some cases this may be due to job tasks that are designed beyond the safe working capacity of the upper limbs.
