ABSTRACT

The designer who wants to consider operator strength when developing a new process or device must decide

which

strength values to use. “Maximal” user strength usually determines the structural integrity of the object, so that even the strongest operator

cannot break a handle or a pedal. “Minimal” user strength is that expected from the weakest operator, which still yields the desired result (such as successfully operating a brake handle or pedal) under the worst circumstances. Actual strength applications will fall within that range between minimum and maximum.
