ABSTRACT
Popular novelists (or novelists who would like to be popular) are often advised to study their readers. It is not always easy for the novelists to follow this advice since they may have no way of knowing whether they are most widely read by politicians, pensioners or plumbers. The writers of student essays do not have this problem; student essays are read by academics. It is worth giving a little thought to the academic reader as a species.
