YORKSHIRE'S MAGISTRATES AND MINISTERS ATTEMPTED TO CONVINCE the future martyr Margaret Clitheroe to attend Protestant services at least once. She refused. “Answer me,” a minister demanded, “What is the church?” Clitheroe replied:
It is that wherein the true word of god is preached which Christ langhs 1 and left to his Apostles and they to their successors: ministering the seven sacraments which the same church hath always observed, doctors preached, and martyrs and confessors witnessed. This is the church which I believe to be true. 2
