ABSTRACT
Readers of this book already know that loss in everyday life takes many forms. Public tragedies involve loss whose impact is felt broadly across a community or the general public. Their immediate effects go beyond those that fall primarily upon an individual, family, or friends. The scale of loss and destruction is larger than that of an individual loss. In addition, these events often involve a strong element of surprise and shock.
