ABSTRACT

The first published account of disaster relief (Dunant, 1986) was written by Jean Henry Dunant in 1862. In A Memory of Solferino, the Swiss citizen Dunant described his efforts to help the wounded from an Italian war battle that occurred in 1859. He urged the creation of war relief societies leading to the founding of the Red Cross in 1863. In the United States, the American Association of the Red Cross was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton.
