Contemporary churches define themselves, or divide themselves, along fairly predictable lines. A few key issues stand in for a host of positions. If you know where someone stands on biblical inerrancy or the expectation of an imminent and literal rapture, for example, you can infer with reasonable accuracy a slew of his or her other theological positions and probably even political and social views such as abortion and the ordination of gay clergy.
