ABSTRACT

This has been a study in the technology of epistemology.1 The concern has been with what we do to bridge the gap between theory and application: the methods (mathematical and instrumental) that causally connect us to our world. This raises, as we’ve seen, issues different from those that the traditional linguistic focus is apt to do. That focus, recall, often takes the form of characterizing knowledge as a successful act of a certain sort. One therefore tries to augment the notion of justification with that extra something so as to yield knowledge – and failures to know are just so many counterexamples to purported definitions of knowledge.
