ABSTRACT

I have not yet responded directly to the possibility that what we perceive can be infiltrated by the categories of our language and our beliefs (that perception is cognitively penetrated); I’ve only claimed that the examples given by Kuhn and others from the history and practice of science do not compel such a view. But isn’t infiltration possible? And, if so, then change in doctrine could change what is perceived: a change in our scientific beliefs could make ob-regularities literally disappear (or appear) before our eyes, obviating the independence of perceptual procedures from the sciences.
