ABSTRACT
There were 35 deaths due to thromboembolism recorded in the Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) in the United Kingdom 1997-1999 (rate 16.5 per million pregnancies). Of the 35 deaths, 31 were from pulmonary embolism (PE) and four from cerebral thrombosis.
