ABSTRACT
This chapter considers theories and arguments about postmodernity and their implications for conceptualizing contemporary social, cultural, political and subjective life. Postmodernist analytical strategies are often influenced by poststructuralist arguments, as considered in the previous chapter. They are associated with a rejection of modernist conceptualizations of the social, and emphasize instead culture, discourse and deconstruction. This chapter considers how theories about postmodernity and postmodern analytical strategies are, in fact, made up of a variety of conceptions and approaches that have different and distinct implications for envisioning the social and the sociological project.
