ABSTRACT

Emotion and the brain There are a range of brain structures that are associated with emotions. Perhaps the most researched is the series of small structures hidden deep in the brain called the limbic system. It is this system that is the difference between mammals (us) and reptiles (e.g. crocodiles) – well, that and the teeth of course. The discovery of the importance of these structures in emotion was made by Papez (1937) by looking at the brains of people and animals that had suffered emotional disorders.
