ABSTRACT

It would be easy to both open and close this chapter in a single word-‘yes’. That this chapter exists is, in itself, an indictment of sport and exercise science (SES). If SES were a gender-inclusive activity then (i) there would be a better gender balance among the contributors to the book and (ii) there would be no need for this chapter. One glance through the list of contributing authors reveals exactly the gender bias (whether that be intentional or not) that we have been asked to explore here. More than 10 years ago the need for sports science to evaluate gender issues was identified, but our worry is that this evaluation has not yet occurred.
