ABSTRACT

The PCP systems currently (2003) used in the U.S. are primarily used for transporting only lightweight cargoes over short distances (e.g., within a building or between buildings). Such systems use nonwheeled capsules in pipes of diameter up to approximately 12 inches (30 cm). They are widely used at drive-up tellers (for transporting cash and documents between customers in their cars and tellers in the bank), in hospitals (for transporting blood samples, medicine, and supplies between buildings or between rooms within a building), in factories (for transporting tools), at airline terminals (for transporting cash and documents between ticket

counters and accounting ofÞces), and in ofÞce buildings (for transporting documents). An example of such a system used at a major hospital is shown in Figure 7.1. Similar systems are also used in other parts of the world (see an example in Figure 7.2).
