ABSTRACT

Sex crimes are generally classified into three different categories: stranger, domestic, and acquaintance. The difference is significant for investigators because distinct strategies are needed to cope with each type of investigation. The strategies employed in acquaintance rapes are different than those involving domestic situations. They in turn are significantly different from those that involve stranger and serial rapes. Although the strategies employed in the different types of sex crime investigations have some core similarities, the differences are substantial and they compel investigators to adjust their methods accordingly to deal with the distinct demands of each. For example, the investigation into a boyfriend or a husband who forcibly rapes is clearly quite different from that of a stranger who attacks women at random and terrorizes entire communities.
